Self-care when your in physical pain and lack focus

Physical pain can be all consuming, causing a lack of focus when you need it the most. Let’s get back to basics with our self-care habits.

I have spent the last month in what I can only describe as chronic physical pain.  Brought on first by an ulcerative colitis flare-up. Now at this point if I practiced what I preach, I’m pretty sure it would not have escalated to a dental abscess and horrendous neck cervicalgia.

I have managed my ulcerative colitis for many many years now, and I know what works for me.  I know there are measures I can put in place to help. They include: slowing down, taking my medication, filling my body with electrolytes and magnesium. Eating easily digestible foods and drinks, such as smoothies, soups, bananas, chicken and eggs. Finding comfort and most importantly, and also for me the hardest part, REST and SLEEP.

How to self-care when your in physical pain and lack focus

Listen to your body

When you are experiencing physical pain your body is talking to you, try and listen. Tune into yourself through deep breathing, meditation and gentle exercise where possible. Tools such as tapping, box breathing, qi gong and guided meditations can really help.

Seek support

Remember it’s okay to ask for help when needed. This could be help from a health care professional or friends and family.  It could be related to pain management, emotional support or tasks you need help to get done.

Find your joy and comforts

Now i’m not saying you need to go and get a puppy…but it does help. Read a book or watch a movie/boxset. Take an epsom salt bath or foot bath. Listen to music. get a hot or cold pack on your pain. Get out in nature, even just to a garden. Listen to music.

Introduce healthy habits

It is so important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, incorporating nutrition, hydration and exercise into you day. Keep it simple, a glass of water when you wake up, a piece of fruit when your hungry, some easy stretches throughout the day.

Self-compassion

Speak to yourself as you would to your friends. Be kind to yourself in times of pain and lack of focus. remember it’s okay to prioritise your well-being, rest and take breaks.
